Hello, my fellow readers. Today I'm going to talk about 'A Ruin Of Roses' by K.F. Breene. The first book in the 'Deliciously Dark Fairytales' series. A spicy new twist on an old/classic/dark Beauty and the Beast reimagining.
This book is great if you enjoy reading spicy books (it's an adult dark romance after all) However the story itself was a little bit off... If it had been written more extensively, the story itself would have been much better. There were parts I couldn't completely follow because I thought I missed something, but it didn't appear to be said (or very vaguely).
The characters were fun. Especially Hadriel, he made me laugh out loud (he is the fun side character).
Finley is our main character, she appears to be in her twenties, but her character feels like she is in her late teens (17-18?). She makes me think that because she thinks in a younger way than a person in her 20's. If that makes sense? Anyway, our Finley is a beautiful girl, living in a poor and sick town. Every guy wants her for her beauty, but she is much more than that. She is brave, intelligent and strong. Our guy Nyfian knows that because he has been watching (voyeurism) her while she was growing up in her town. He is the badass beast, the whole castle talks about. But deep down he is kind of a softie (for Finley) even though he acts like an alpha guy.
The time area of this book was something strange to me. It appears to be in this time because they had electricity and all... But thanks to the curse and fantasy stuff (genre), it doesn't feel like it takes place in this time.
The world-building was fun, I got a good idea of how the world looked like (because it wasn't big and it was well written). There is no map in the book, but it isn't necessary.
Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. However, I wished that the story was more extensive (and I mean: more details and dept) Maybe in book 2 it will make more sense. The characters were fun, but I kind of missed the part where they grew to each other. SPOILER ALERT!! It was from hate to mate... The smut was fun, but I wished it was on better occasions and not at the end of the book while a plot should grow in its story. Furthermore, it was a fun/spicy book with amusing characters and a tensive plot. I am curious to read the next book: A Throne of Ruin. Because I am intrigued to read this series further.
Synopsis:
I could save him, but he would ruin me.
The beast.
The creature that stalks the forbidden wood.
The dragon prince.
He has suffered a fate worse than death. We all have. A curse put upon us by the mad king.
We are a kingdom locked in time. Shifters unable to feel our animals. Stuck here by a deal between the late king and a demon who seeks destruction.
The only one keeping this kingdom alive is Nyfian, the golden prince to a stolen throne. The last dragon shifter.
He's our hope.
He's my nightmare.
When he catches me trespassing in the forbidden wood, he doesn't punish me with death, as he's entitled.
He takes me, instead. Forces me back to the castle as his prisoner. Seeks to use me.
Apparently, I can save him. I can save the whole forgotten kingdom, locked away by the demon king's power.
But it would mean taming the monster beneath his skin. It would mean giving myself to him.
It would mean my ruin...
Love, ❤
DarkBlue.
